STORY: As athletes gear up for the 2016 Olympic games some say the don’t believe the Zika virus or the political turmoil in Brazil will stop the games from being a spectacular event.

Nike showcased their new Olympic uniforms in New York on Thursday (March 17). Brand ambassador David Oliver said when he first heard about the Zika virus he thought “wow, what the heck? I need to do some research on this,” Oliver explained. “But you know once again, hopefully authorities will be able to figure something out. They’ve got time to at least look into some avenues to quell the concerns with that Zika virus.”

Last month the United States Olympic Committee told U.S. sports federations that athletes and staff concerned for their health over the Zika virus should consider not going to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in August.

Oliver said his training for the games is underway and he is confident in his capabilities and isn’t doing any special training.

“I’m not a big believer in like changing or anything like that unless you have to. What got you there will keep you there. I’ve been at the top of my sport, my event for 10 years so, I mean, I figure if I stick with that same plan it’ll carry me through again this year,” he told Reuters.

For Brazilian basketball star Clarissa Santos, it’ll be a special experience to be part of the team hosting the games. She said that despite anger about government corruption and claims about pollution that could impact the games, she believes that this year’s Olympics will be special.

“I don’t think the problems will overshadow [the games] because there are a lot of people working towards a beautiful olympics. That’s what I think will happen. I think everybody will be very excited to make it an incredible event and there will be lots of people gathered and it will be positive. People will leave happy.”

The opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics is set for Aug. 5.
